1. Introduction
In this lesson, you will learn about the sus 4 chord. Sus is short for suspension. The sus 4 chord is similar to the major chord, except that the middle note of the sus 4 chord, in root position, is an interval of a major 4th above the root, instead of an interval of a major 3rd above the root, like in the major chord. For example, the notes of the C major chord are C, E, G. The notes of the C sus 4 chord are C, F, G.

2. Constructing the Sus 4 Chord
Playing the sus 4 chord is easy. Just play a major chord in root position, but raise the middle note by one half step. Another way to think about it is by using a formula of half steps. Below is the formula for the sus 4 chord.

Root + 5HS + 2HS

3. Playing the Sus 4 Chord
Let's take a look at the sus 4 chord starting on C. This is called the C sus 4 chord (Csus4). In the animation below, the notes of the C sus 4 chord are first played separately, then together.

Compare the C sus 4 chord above to the C major chord below, which you learned about in beginner lessons. Notice that the only visual difference between the C sus 4 chord and the major chord is that the middle note of the sus 4 chord, in root position, is one half step higher than the third note of the major chord, in root position.

4. Sus 4 Chord in all 12 Keys
You can play the sus 4 chord in all twelve keys. Below is a chart of all 12 sus 4 chords.

5. Conclusion
In this lesson, you have learn how to play the C sus 4 chord. There is a sus 4 chord for each of the 12 keys.
