In this blog, we will learn how to play the whole tone scale in the key of C on the piano keyboard, starting by playing three white keys (C, D, E) and three black keys (F#, G#, A#) on the keyboard. It is much fun and easier to remember how to play the whole tone scale in the key of C. We have learned in the piano basics section about the layout of the piano keyboard which is made up of a pattern of five black piano keys and seven white piano keys throughout the piano keyboard. We have also learned the names of the white keys, which are: C, D, E, F, G, A and B; and the names of the black keys which are: C#, D#, F#, G# and A#. |

In piano Lesson 14, we also learned about the music interval: the smallest interval in the Western music is half-step or half tone (semi-tone). A whole step or whole tone is made up of two half steps. So if you look at the first three white keys starting from key C, you can see that the distance between C to D is one whole step, and the distance between D to E is also one whole step. After C, D and E, the next key that will have one whole tone of distance from E is F# since the distance between E and F is only one half step. And the next one whole step from F# is G#, and then A# (which is also one whole step from G#). |
Watch the video above to see how this is done. The notes for the whole tone scale start with key F are: F, G, A, B, Db, Eb, F. Hope you fun learning how to play the whole tone scale.
