Ludwig van Beethoven

1770 Ludwig Van Beethoven

Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany. He was one of the best known pianists and composers. When he was young, Beethoven was taught by his own father to play the piano. Johann van Beethoven was a very strict teacher, and wanted to exploit Beethoven as a child prodigy since the young Beethoven was very talented.

Around late 1770’s, Beethoven began to study with one of the prominent teachers in Bonn. His teacher was Christian Gottlob Neefe who taught him how to compose. Later, Neefe helped Beethoven to write his fist published composition. At the time Neefe still held a position as the Court’s Organist, and Ludwig soon began working for him as an assistant organist.

In 1790, Beethoven had already composed many works of his own, but none of those were published. Three years later, Beethoven would become a reputable improviser in the salons of the nobility. His friend, Nikolaus Simrock began to publish his works for him.

Beethoven made his first public performance in 1795 in Vienna. He played one of his own piano concertos. In 1801, his first six string quartets (Op. 18), written a few years earlier, were finally published. By 1802, with the help of his brother, the publishing of his works began to flourish.

Beethoven wrote one of his famous pieces, Fur Elise, which was published in 1867, 40 years after his death. His other famous works also included: Moonlight Sonata, and Fifth Symphony. In his lifetime, Beethoven had written nine symphonies, five piano concertos, one violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, and 16 string quartets.

1796 Beethoven’s hearing had started to deteriorate. He had a hard time to hear his own music, and the symptoms continue to progress. By the year 1824, when he conducted the premier of his Ninth Symphony played by his student, Beethoven was completely deaf. Nonetheless his deafness didn’t prevent Beethoven him from composing music.
